The Green Box Derby is many things. It’s not just a soap box derby. It’s also based on a recycling theme. It has a little something for everyone. Young adults (12-19 years of age) can compete in a Scholarship Race. Adults (20+) can compete in a Trophy-Only Race. Those with an artistic flair can go after the People’s Choice Award.
The Scholarship Race offers a few prizes. The first place prize is a $2500 Scholarship to Terra State Community College. The second place prize is a $1000 Scholarship to Terra State Community College. The rest of the racers will be entered into a drawing to win a $1000 Terra State Community College Scholarship, Cedar Point Season Passes, and Sandusky County Fair Passes.
The Green Box Derby isn’t only about the prizes. It’s bigger than that. It’s about creating a skilled career path for young adults.
There is a big push for our youth to go to college. Thousands of young adults rack up hefty student loan debt – and then struggle to find a job in their field.
It doesn’t have to be that way. According to Forbes, “The hardest segment of the workforce for employers to staff with skilled talent hasn’t been registered nurses or engineers or even web developers. It’s been the skilled trades – the welders, electricians, machinists, etc.. that are so prevalent in manufacturing and construction.” Skilled trades workers are NEEDED – “in 2013, 53% of the skilled trades workforce was over the age of 45”. Not only are they NEEDED, there are Apprenticeship programs in place to PAY young adults to get the education that they need in order to be successful skilled trades workers. This means that those who choose to pursue skilled trades careers will NOT have ANY student loan debt! They will NOT have a hard time finding a job in their field!
